• Needless to say, the average job applicant can find it hard to stay hopeful in this environment while they are looking for work. All the resume tweaks and interview tips in the world cannot guarantee that they will find a new role within a reasonable timeframe that stops them from going into serious debt. Conventional 9-to-5 work is still what most people expect to be doing to make a living, but it seems like the openings for this kind of thing are becoming more and more exclusive.

• This is an environment that is almost unthinkable to anyone who was looking for a job a generation ago. Maybe it was the Boomers who had it best, with their ability to land a role just by strolling into the right business and shaking hands. Even those who were a little younger, though, had an easier time of it than most of those who are trying to find work today. No matter what the headlines may say, this can mean that empathy is in short supply from those who had a very different experience with job seeking. There is no comparison.

• An employee in a large finance company was flabbergasted to hear how two of their colleagues, who had worked in the same place for around 30 years, were talking about former coworkers who had been laid off. They claimed not to understand how they could be spending several months searching for a new job, and concluded that it must be because they didn't want to work.
